The Exam

There are more than 400 virtual physical exams that you can perform. When you enter the Exam section for the first time, you may be presented with the Hypothesis window. If you've already entered a hypothesis and don't want to add to it, click Done to proceed. You must select the hypothesis you are investigating at the top of the screen.

The Patient Appearance is displayed when you first enter the Exam screen.

To perform a physical exam on the patient:

  • Click the appropriate body view button
  • Click the appropriate exam tool
  • Click the body part that you are investigating
  • Review the patient responses
Note that the tool and body part are displayed as your cursor rolls over the patient image. When you locate the appropriate body part, click the mouse.

Click Other Exams to see a list of observations, maneuvers, and mental status exams that you can order.

You can listen to the breath sounds by applying the stethoscope tool to the upper or middle back in the Body view, and to the heart sounds from the Chest view. We recommend that you use headphones to listen to sounds.

When you complete the Exam, you can access the Lab or Interview screens as needed. You may use Notes, Learning, or SOAP to record your thoughts or issues that arise during your investigation. You may also click on the Management button to enter an Interim Patient Management item.
